About R.B. Winter State Park

R.B. Winter State Park covers over 695 acres in Union County, Pennsylvania, featuring a mix of wooded hills, rocky outcrops, and a man-made swimming lake. The park sits along Penns Creek and is part of the Ridge and Valley Province of the Appalachian Mountains, characterized by rolling hills and hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and pine. Established in 1933 and named after Richard Burke Winter, a former director of the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, the park offers visitors opportunities throughout the year including hiking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, and winter activities such as cross-country skiing and snow tubing. The central feature is the 3.5-acre lake that draws swimmers in summer and is surrounded by picnic areas and playgrounds. The park includes over 11 miles of multi-use trails traversing scenic forested areas, rocky ledges, and streams. Wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various songbirds inhabit the park. The Mountaintop Trail provides panoramic views of Penns Creek valley. Winter sports enthusiasts enjoy sledding and snow tubing on specially maintained slopes. The park’s mix of recreation, natural beauty, and accessibility makes it a popular destination for families and outdoor lovers alike.
